Unpopular logic

Let me start by saying that I love Neil deGrasse Tyson. And it would likely require him ripping the heads off puppies, daubing himself in their blood (while naked) and then dancing around a campfire and howling at the moon for me to say an unkind word about him. And those unkind words would likely be relegated to asking him to keep it down. And maybe cover his junk with a sock.

You can I suppose argue some disconnect to the general mood or perhaps a lack of empathy. But I don’t think you can argue that he’s wrong.

Of course the mob has now come for him and he’s apologized. I wouldn’t have… (I say with some level of bravado that likely doesn’t exist)

    1. I wholeheartedly agree with you. And I think that was exactly the point he was trying to make. And (in my opinion) got unfairly slammed.
If only we could all cooperate effectively instead of politicking the whole time.

      2. Very. It makes conversations very difficult because you’re always worried you’ll be ‘outed’ for saying the wrong thing. How are we ever supposed to learn anything from each other anymore… no one debates or supplies a counter argument… its all just outrage.

      4. Agreed! And also how each tweet or sound bite or whatever is judged as the complete distillation of who we are. I mean NdGT has never said… as far as I know… a mean thing about anyone… and suddenly instead of being judged as the sum of the whole he is judged by a single tweet. Ergh!

Anyways, makes me mad! That and I think we have to consider the intent of the author. I can’t see that his intention was ever to be unkind to anyone, or be flippant about tragedy. But I think his mind is that of a logistician… and that he thins about stuff like this differently.

    1. I do get what you’re saying. I really do. I mean it should be all hands on deck to combat this sort of thing.

I just sorta get where NdGT is coming from. I don’t think his intent was ever to be mean spirited or unkind… rather to just make us consider that we pull together for some things… but not for others.
