Go Darke

Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it

Astronomy

Scale

This is awesome!

At a hop, skip and a jump, the red hyper-giant VY Canis Majoris is about 3900 light years away from earth. The radius of VY CMa is about 1,420 times that of our sun with a volume of about 3 billion times more. If you were in a magical space ship traveling at the speed of light it would take you 6 hours to travel around the star’s circumference, compared to 14.5 seconds for our local star.

Scale in space is absolutely mind bending.

Consider my mind blown, Jo. That sort of scale is as incomprehensible to me as the mind of god should be to believers.

Oh, can we do the other way now, the small inside the small inside the small… Horton hears a who.

That’s pretty amazing, yet simultaneously I am unable to comprehend it.

Canis Majoris “Big Dog” is one of my favorite stars!!! 😍 it’s about the size of our entire solar system, give or take (sizing stars is not an exact science lol) but it is considered one of the biggest stars. Possibly is. It’s a tricky business measuring them…. but yeah!!
