Feeling somewhat well disposed to the 80’s I watched the Masters of the Universe movie from 1987 this morning. Which… for some reason… I remembered as having cast Rutger Hauer as the hero protagonist… but it was actually Dolph Lundgren. Which is quite the action hero faux pas to make.

This is the first movie I ever went to go see without adult supervision. I would have been… (counts on his fingers) eight years old.
I have a vivid memory of waiting in the cinema complex parking lot afterwards to be picked up, animatedly discussing the various fight scenes with my friend and then being reprimanded by my mom for quoting the single instance of swearing in the entire movie when she arrived.
Fast forward. After an hour of synth-pop and jarringly bad choreography I decided that perhaps the 80’s were better left imagined as being the pinnacle of civilization and perhaps weren’t meant to be relived thirty three years later in a burst of Corona-fueled boredom.
Although maybe there are better epoch defining movies.
Like LadyHawke, Conan the Barbarian and… the Dark Crystal…
… all of which I am now reticent to watch, lest I ruin my childhood.
